How much water should we drink daily?

How much water you need depends on many things and the amount can vary from person to person. For adults, according to the general recommendations of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine:

11.5 cups a day for women (2.7 liters)

15.5 cups (3.7 liters) a day for men

This includes water, beverages such as tea and juice, and food liquids. You get an average of 20% water from your food.

You may need more water than anyone else. How much water you need also depends on:

Where you live: You will need more water in hot, humid or dry areas. If you live in the mountains or at high altitudes, you will need more water.

Your diet: If you drink too much coffee and other caffeinated beverages, you may lose more water due to excess urine. If your diet is high in salty, spicy, or sugary foods, you may need to drink more water. Or, if you don't eat a lot of hydrating foods that are high in water, such as fresh or cooked fruits and vegetables.

Temperature or weather: You may need more water in the hot months than in the colder months due to sweating.

Your environment: If you spend a lot of time outside in the sun or in hot temperatures or in a warm room, you may get thirsty more quickly.

How active you are: If you are active during the day or walk or stand a lot, you will need more water than a person who does not do much work. If you exercise or do any strenuous activity, you will need to drink more to make up for the lack of water.

Your health: If you have an infection or fever, or if you lose fluid through vomiting or diarrhea, you will need to drink more water. If you have a health condition like diabetes, you will also need more water. Some medications, such as diuretics, can also make you dehydrated.

Pregnant or lactating: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding your baby, you will need to drink extra water to stay hydrated. After all, your body is working for two (or more).
