Why did North Korea ban people from laughing and shopping for 11 days?

Former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died of a heart attack on December 17, 2011 at the age of 69. His 17-year rule is considered the darkest period in North Korea's history.

In North Korea, various restrictions have been imposed on citizens on the 10th anniversary of Kim Jong Il.

Laughter will be banned in 11 days of mourning. During this time no citizen will be able to do shopping or drinking and otherwise he will be arrested.
